About
I wanted to make an animation for a long time but I always told myself that I didn't have enough time. Once the quarantine hit, I couldn't continue telling myself the same excuse. From figuring out how to animate, experimenting, and problem-solving, this project took around two months. Even though it took a long time, I learned a lot. I'm glad I was able to make something that looked like how I imagined it.
About
Execution
Drawing the StyleMost Melee trailers use the in-game camera or 3D work. There have been amazing trailers using those tools. However, I wanted to do something different and make something in 2D. Being at home during the quarantine, I had time to watch more TV than I usually do. One of those shows was Ping Pong the Animation, which inspired the visual style of this animation.

C&D Origins
It was around the time I was working on this that The Big House, a major Smash Bros. Melee tournament, received a cease and desist letter from Nintendo stopping The Big House from having their online tournament. In honor of The Big House, I decided to name the animation C&D (cease and desist). come at me nintendo Because the last animation frame ends with two characters, (Captain Falcon on left, Fox McCloud right), that are about to hit each other, it's implied in the animation that Captain Falcon hit the other character with the knee based on the elements of the final logo reveal. Whenever the knee hits in-game, sparks fly around and the enemy goes flying all over the place as if hit with a lightning attack. It's magical once executed perfectly. I took the elements from when the knee hits in-game and blended them with the logo. Another element I added from the game is the movement of the letters. Whenever someone gets hit in-game, the "life bar" of the player does a little jiggle in response to being hit.

Music
The SynthI'm a Captain Falcon main. With this in mind, I'm going to be biased towards Captain Falcon and put Captain Falcon easter eggs wherever I can. I chose this synth because a similar synth is in F-Zero X, the main game where Captain Falcon appears in. This particular sound can be heard before each race starts. before each race starts.

The Bass
I wanted the track to be energetic and I also wanted the music to match the pacing of the video. Given the short length of the animation, I didn't want to make an intricate bass because the pattern would only repeat for one measure and I had to make a pause in the middle for the logo transition. The kick and bass are friends in this track making a sick beat when it all comes together.
